Ts’uhoont’i’ whusainya (Welcome)

Allan Downey, Dakelh (Nak’azdli First Nation) author, educator, and historian of Indigenous and Canadian history.  Academic Associate in Indigenous Studies at the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada and Lecturer in the Department of History at McGill University.

Ts’uhoont’i’ whusainya (welcome). I am a proud member of the Nak’azdli First Nation (Dakelh Nation) and a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University (PhD, History).  I am currently an Academic Associate in Indigenous Studies at the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada as well as a Course Lecturer in the Department of History at McGill University.  I joined McGill in August 2014 after teaching in the Department of History and North American Studies program at Laurier.  My most recent research has focused on the history of lacrosse, and sport more generally, in Indigenous communities as a lens to view Aboriginal identity formation and my forthcoming book, The Creator’s Game, is currently under contract with UBC Press.  Beyond teaching, I split my time volunteering for Aboriginal communities and youth organizations, giving public lectures, as well as promoting post-secondary education to Indigenous youth.
